Retail sales in August rose a healthy 2.6 percent over last year, indicating consumer spending is back on track after several months of depressed sales results. The National Retail Federation today reported that August retail sales, excluding autos, gas and restaurants, also grew 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted from July. Read more »

July 22, 2015: National Retail Rederation Revises Annual Economic Forecast

The National Retail Federation today lowered its retail sales forecast for 2015 because of unexpected slow growth recorded during the first half of the year, similar to the industry’s experience in 2014. However, NRF expects sales will steadily increase through the remainder of the year. NRF forecasted in February that retail sales would grow 4.1 percent in 2015 over 2014, but today’s revision lowers the forecast to 3.5 percent. Read more »

June 30, 2015: Where Beauty Meets Function

If you find yourself traveling between Northern and Southern California in the near future, plan a side trip to the Outlets at Tejon in Tejon Ranch.

What sets this center apart from the competition is the way architectural firm Adams and Associates married beauty and function. The 43-acre site mirrors the historic Tejon Ranch environment, and is both energy and water efficient through the use of drought-tolerant native plants and reclaimed water. Read more »

May 14, 2015: Navigating The Pricing Waters

Navigating today’s competitive retail environment can be daunting. The difference between riding the wave of success and being pulled under by the current relies on the ability to read and react to the marketplace. Not only do retailers need to know who is buying, they’d better figure out what’s being bought, how, when, why and from whom. Read more »

March 26, 2015: Hot Topic: Internet Competition

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have …” I’m always fascinated by how people finish that sentence. You never know if their comments will be funny, heart-warming or serious. When this new blog launched, I asked a couple of company leaders to complete that sentence. Now it’s time to hear from the second individual.

Nanette Zakian, president of Hachik Distributors Inc. in Aston, Pa., was up for the challenge. Read more »

February 24, 2015: The CMO's Challenge: Marketing Budgets In The Digital Age

How traditional stores will remain relevant and vital in the digital age

For retail marketers, measuring the effect of traditional marketing efforts on in-store sales has become as much science as it is art. The designs and themes change by a campaign or season, but evaluating successes and areas for improvement is aided by time-tested, attributable factors, such as measuring redemption rates of coded coupons from direct mail or advertising inserts. Today this is only a piece of the puzzle. Read more »

September 25, 2014: A New Perspective on New Establishments

The lifecycle of business — referred to as business dynamism — is a key driver of innovation and growth in the U.S. economy.

The ability to generate economic growth and innovation in the U.S. from this dynamic or churn cycle (businesses are created, established, grow, decline, get recycled and regrown again) is the envy of the world. However, there is growing concern that business dynamism appears to have slowed precipitously over the last several decades. Read more »

August 11, 2014: Time For Agreement on Sales Tax Fairness

As the French philosopher Voltaire once said, the perfect is the enemy of the good.

For more than a dozen years now, NRF has tried to convince Congress to pass a law letting states require online merchants to collect sales tax the same as local stores and end a disparity that has left Main Street at a severe disadvantage as e-commerce grows at an increasingly rapid pace. Read more »

March 20, 2014: House Hearing Shows Progress on Sales Tax Fairness

Last week was a critical step forward in the debate on sales tax fairness. At a three-hour-plus House Judiciary Committee hearing last Wednesday, members of Congress heard from a panel of lobbyists, experts and attorneys on various proposals to eliminate the sales tax disparity that gives online sellers a price advantage to the detriment of community retailers and Main Street merchants. November 9, 2012:  RAYPAK — Hurricane Sandy Damaged Equipment

Our East Coast was recently hit hard by Hurricane Sandy bringing extensive flooding and property damage. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this recent tragedy. However, we don’t want them to incur further mishaps by taking the risk of reusing a flooded boiler, water heater, or pool heater where hidden damage to the controls, refractory, and other components often exist. Read more »
